[On the morning of the tenth, Iwaizumi will find Oikawa missing beside him but on the pillow instead will be a Tyranitar & Larvitar plush with a handwritten note next to a rose that reads:]
Happy Birthday Iwa-chan, you deserve the best on your birthday! I'm glad you showed up and I'm happy you're my boyfriend.
[There's a location and time written with less effort, stating to meet up later that afternoon and dress a bit nicer but nothing as fancy as prom.]
[Iwaizumi hadn't been paying much attention to the dates, if he was being honest. So when he woke up the next morning to a plush beside him instead of his boyfriend, he found himself toying with being annoyed.
Until he found the note. And the rose.
For a second he wondered if he'd missed an anniversary... Realised quickly they hadn't been together long enough to have one, and then reached for the note to read.
Imagine the blush when he realised it was kind of an anniversary he'd forgotten. His own. His own birthday. At least one of them remembered. He sighed then on reading the note again. Did that mean he wouldn't get to see Oikawa until he met up with him? Somehow that was... disappointing... Iwaizumi grabbed up the plush toy, folded it in his arms and fell back into the bed.
---
By afternoon, Iwaizumi had bucked himself up. He'd showered and dressed, considered bringing the plush with him but instead decided to leave it warming his side of the bed.
Then it was off to find Oikawa and demand to know why he had to dress up on his birthday when sitting around in sweats would have been just as acceptable.]
[As much as Tooru wanted to stay in bed and laze the day away and mindlessly trace circles across his boyfriend's arms or chest, or lay there curled next to him, it wouldn't be very him to do either on a birthday of all things. Especially when this whole world had been hectic and eventful since the moment Tooru woke up in New Bark Town. No, this called for a nice date, and he was going to insist on doing things properly. Even if it meant not seeing Iwaizumi until lunchtime outside of the restaurant he scribbled the directions of on the note.
He himself was dressednicely with his hair perfectly styled instead of just brushed through in mornings recently, making it look like that perfect hairdo back home, though just a little bit longer. He was due for a haircut soon, but he'd deal with that another day.
Though when he spots his boyfriend, all of the words catch in his throat. Damn Iwaizumi for being so ridiculously handsome with those thick arms and chest. Wait. No. He had to focus his thoughts and not start daydreaming as he waves and walks over to place a kiss on the other boy's cheek, hoping that slight blush wouldn't be noticed.]
I was getting ready to send Hikari-chan after you to come drag you here!
[He wasn't, of course, and was just playing up the dramatics. It's not like he'd set a specific time to be there or else.]
But nevermind that, what'd you think about my gift? You look good, by the way.
[On catching sight of Oikawa, Iwaizumi couldn't help feeling maybe he'd overdressed. He hadn't realised this was a 'shorts' kind of date. Though he had to admit, if to himself, that his boyfriend looked damn good...
He raised a hand of his own to wave, dropping it by the time Oikawa had joined him. The corner of his lips curved when he was gifted a kiss to his cheek of all things. It was still... strange. They'd done more than those little kisses, but somehow the hints of intimacy and affection were harder to get used to than actually sleeping with Oikawa. It was getting easier though. With each kiss and touch, Iwaizumi was beginning to really enjoy it.
He did, however, choose to roll his eyes right then.]
I'm right on time. [A pause, he looked away as if giving the question some serious thought, that was ruined when Oikawa decided to add a compliment onto the end of the question. His cheeks warmed just a bit.]
I really liked the gift. You don't look too bad yourself. [He smiled.] Now you gonna tell me what I dressed up for?
[He does catch that slight smile, his own smile getting even brighter. Oh how he adored when Iwaizumi smiled, it was one of the best things to see on him, whether he was dressed or not. Tooru can't help but kissing that smile before getting down to business of why they're out in the first place.]
I always look good! And you're welcome. Isn't it obvious, though? Lunch! It's a date, Iwa-chan, a proper date because it's your birthday unless you forgot.
[There was a hint of a flush to his cheeks, not for the kiss but for being caught out. He had forgotten. That was exactly what had happened. And Oikawa was a shit for having called him on it.
And so, in true Iwaizumi fashion, he punched his arm.]
Shut up, Shittykawa. Just feed me.
[He sounded grumpy, even refused to look Oikawa in the eye. But there was also a pleased little light in his eyes. A date? They hadn't really had time for one of those up to now. And didn't it warm his cold, dark heart to know that Oikawa had planned one for his birthday? It sure did. It even made up for his boyfriend abandoning him for the entirety of the morning.]
HEY!! Don't punch me you brute. So mean to your boyfriend, MEAN!
[And yet that whine is completely fake due to Tooru laughing and looking at Iwaizumi fondly. He adores that face, and the pleased light in his eyes made him fall even harder for the older boy. If that was even possible at this point.
But he takes Iwaizumi by the hand, lacing his fingers in his, and leads him inside.]
[Iwaizumi lets Oikawa take his hand. It wasn't like he was really angry. He couldn't be, not today. He was in too good a mood to be angry, though he could make a show of it just fine.
He moved up beside his boyfriend with a grin.]
Damn right you better. Didn't bring me breakfast in bed, you better make it up to me.
[There's a chaotic and mischievous little laugh at those words, accompanied by a wicked little grin. Meaning that Tooru is plotting something that he won't tell Iwaizumi about.]
Oh I will~~ I'll treat you to a snack or even dinner in bed.
[Whether he meant something filthy or genuine, is anyone's guess, but there's no time to be openly vulgar in the nice restaurant. It's the place with the best agedashi tofu, and that's half of the reason Tooru has been recently going off on his own earlier in the afternoons recently. Other than to train, that is.]
[Iwaizumi caught the grin and said nothing about it. Wasn't that the same kind of smile he always had?]
Dinner in bed? That works.
[He didn't care how it was meant, being doted on wasn't usually his style. But today it was going to be his style. He fully expected Oikawa to spread his romantic wings and show him it could be done. Otherwise Iwaizumi was never going to let him live it down.
And it really was a nice restaurant. They were shown to seats and Iwaizumi had a chance to look over the menu and gave a soft whistle under his breath.]
[Instead of being a menace, Tooru simply winks at Iwaizumi with the hint of what he means, but he won't push for it even if he wants to do something "extra special" for his boyfriend.
But for now, he behaves, and sits across Iwaizumi so he can look at him while talking. As well as point out the agedashi tofu on the menu, which he does once the menu is picked up, and taps at it after reaching over after ordering some tea.]
[He just smiled at that wink. Iwaizumi was open to suggestions for what to do with the rest of their day, but for now he fully planned on enjoying his lunch date with his boyfriend. So after Oikawa ordered his tea, he did the same. And then went back to the menu to find that, yes, they really did have his favourite.
His smile widened.]
Guess I know what I'm getting then. Did I even need to bother looking at the menu?
[There was no anger or irritation to Iwaizumi's voice, only an odd warmth. Oikawa knew him so well he could have just walked him in and sat him down to a table full of food and each one would have been bang on the money. It helped that Iwaizumi trusted him enough to be able to do something like that.]
No, you didn't. But I'm gonna try the okonomiyaki here, see anything else you'd want since I don't think your favourite is gonna be enough for a meal.
[He's teasing, but also half serious about the meal. The tofu is good but it's no meal, especially with how much Tooru knows the both of them can pack away.
But that smile makes it even better, and he has to resist leaning over to kiss his boyfriend right then and there, because Iwaizumi's smile is kissable and he loves it. So much.]
[Public displays of affection were still something that Iwaizumi was getting used to... However, he probably would have liked that kiss just then. Not that he would have admitted it. And he probably would have told Oikawa off for doing it in the middle of the restaurant, but so what?
Since his tofu wasn't considered a meal, and he doubted ordering three plates of it would make it one, Iwaizumi turned back to the menu to look over it and find something else.]
The Tempura Soba looks good... but so does that Hamburger Steak. Maybe both?
[Because he had no doubt that whatever he got, Oikawa would want some.]
[There's a little smirk on Tooru's face as Iwaizumi suggested those two things, he'd definitely steal some of the food no matter what. Best friend and boyfriend privileges allowed him this, even if it wasn't proper to do in public, but Tooru's allowed himself some childishness when it came to that.]
[And sharing both, of course. So when the waiter returned with their drinks, Iwaizumi ordered the three dishes that he had chosen. He was a little excited if he was honest. The foods on offer were the same as back home. And if they tasted the same... Then this was going to be a pretty good birthday. A taste of home and spending quality time with his boyfriend. He couldn't ask for more.]
What we don't finish, we can take with us, but I think we can eat all this.
[Tooru gives his own order of okonomiyaki, and smiles sweetly at the waiter before turning his attention back to Iwaizumi with the same sweet smile, but with additional affection in it.
At the question, he shrugs and props his elbow up on a table to lean into one of his hands. He could tell the truth that he was looking for another gift or where to watch the sunset, or even that he'd gotten another gift to give later. But instead he keeps it vague, but doesn't show any signs of lying, because is it really lying if some of it is true?]
Looking around for something, and did a little training, as well as checked out the gym for our next badge challenge.
[Whether he believed Oikawa or not wasn't important, the fact he was there was. The only thing he really believed was the gym part.]
How'd that go down?
[As he spoke, as innocent as you like, he'd pulled a foot free of one of his shoes and stretched it out to lightly and playfully stroke up Oikawa's ankle.]
[He doesn't expect to be believed completely about that little fib, but it doesn't matter. He's got the whole day planned and not being believed isn't going to ruin that.]
Looks like we'll need to use any Dark or Ghost types there if we want to be supe— IWA-CHAN!
[He'd been too into what he was saying to notice at first the foot, but when he did, it tickled a bit and Tooru couldn't help but flash a smile as he laughs. An open mouthed, bright smile that showed off his teeth. It takes all of his energy not to just blurt out how much he loves his boyfriend, but he manages not to somehow.]
[Iwaizumi managed to keep that innocent look as he raised a finger to his lips, winked and then smiled. He'd seen the waitress heading their way with their drinks, so he thanked her for his and pulled it closer so he could take a sip, blowing on it lightly first.
By the time she left his polite smile was growing as he slowly teased his socked foot along Oikawa's calf and down again.]
[that laugh turns into a pout, and then rolling his eyes at the silliness shown so openly with Iwaizumi. It's nice to see him be publicly sweet, and it just makes him fall harder, as if it were even possible to do.]
Yeah, those two. Normal types could work, they're not hit by ghost moves, but normal type and fighting type moves are useless against ghosts as well.
[He was learning. It was somehow easier to do things like this the longer he was with Oikawa. Which was funny since they'd been together since they were kids. Just... not in this way. Not nearly as free to be affectionate.
Or maybe it was something about the atmosphere? Whatever the case was, Iwaizumi was in a very good mood.
He nodded along with what Oikawa told him, sipped at his tea and set the cup back down with a smile.]
So you're saying it's a done deal? Don't think we'll have an issue with going ahead with that gym.
Gift delivery, fwd dated to the tenth for Iwa's birthday
